The final run down the Taos Box of 2019 was an adventure for all!
The final Taos Box run is always a sad moment, when we complete our rafting season but now we look forward to what winter will bring in the form of snow. The gauge was reading 645 cfs on the 31st of August which is a rare occurrence, historically speaking it is usually half that number.
Ski Jump Rapid will always get you wet!
Floating under the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is always a sight to behold. Does it look higher from the raft on the river or while standing on the bridge looking at the river below?
The image below is of Dead Car rapid Class 3 showing the tight chute on the left that is the entry for running the rapid. One then needs to quickly move right inorder to avoid the large boulders lower left.
There were a lot of changes to the river channel over the past winter and during the high water event of this season, many boulders moved and one new rapid created by rock fall. The image below shows a new large boulder at the bottom of Powerline Rapid Class 4. When this boulder arrived at this location and where it came from remains a mystery.
There’s always whitewater action to be had at the bottom of Powerline Rapid. Looks like everyone ended up in the back seat. HaHa!
Water came from above and below, hence the rain gear, as we navigated the most challenging rapid, the Rock Garden.
More new boulders can be found in Boat Reamer Rapid. Here our guide Joey and crew execute an unplanned stop.
With a little tug on the rope Neil was able to assist in the extrication of the raft from the far corner.
All smiles at the end of the day.
